Wheatstalk 2008

Wheatstalk 2008 will include three nights of live music, house-concert-style, in the Wheat Palace here on Birch Creek Road, Talkeetna, Alaska. The music will be webcast live, and as usual for single house concerts, online listeners will have the opportunity to buy signed CDs or leave tips for performers via Paypal, and as usual, musicians will break into delighted smiles when they see the support and applause that comes in from around the world.

Locally, folks are invited to come over and join in the fun and music. Doors will open each evening at 5 PM for a potluck, BYOB (share or hoard as you like!). Grace, Esther, and Bev have been volunteering to orchestrate the festivities around the music. Bev and Jim Gleason have plans for a big ol' pot of Jim Kloss's favorite chili on Saturday night, with fresh cornbread. Yum!

Thursday kickoff

Thursday kicks off with Boston poet Tim Mason, Anchorage singer-songwriter Tom Begich, and the much-looked-forward-to return of Austin's Danny Schmidt. It's possible we'll add another act earlier on Thursday - stay tuned for that.

Friday Festivities

On Friday, the night will start out with Esther's 42nd birthday party. There's a rumor that Deborah might make some martinis with extra olives for those that would like one. Esther likes martinis, and gets a little loopy on half of one, and will probably don a princess birthday cap. So that seems birthday-ish. Talkeetna's Bathtub Gin (dixieland jazz) and the Simpletones (old-timey) will provide a fun musical backdrop to cake and ice cream after dinner. Then sit down and immerse yourself in the quirky/creative music of Marian Call from Anchorage, followed by Rachael Sage, from New York City. It'll be her first visit to Alaska. She plays piano with her songs, with a poppier style - and reputedly throws out some good Yiddish phrases mid-performance.

Saturday Sounds

Then on Saturday the music starts right up at 5PM with an hour-long "Songs In The Round" with Esther, Robin Hopper, Ann Pence, and the debut public performance of musher-massage therapist Melanie Gould. Maybe Danny Schmidt will add a song of his into that mix, too...? At 6PM we'll settle in for Emily Kurn, who delighted us last winter with her unique voice and thoughtful songs. At 7PM, the night blooms with a Talkeetna Local Music Celebration. So far this includes Tom Wait, Steve Durr, Brendan Bonnett, Stu Carnegie, Kathy Teich, Esther Golton, a second appearance by Melanie Gould (!), and many more to be confirmed.

Other Stuff

Did I say there are potlucks every night? And Grace, Bev, and Esther will see to it that there's one good big pot of cheap food each night, too. And did I mention that if the weather's good there will be a campfire out back?

As usual, there'll be a $10 donation at the door, and all goes to the artists. They all thank you for helping them to keep creating and performing...

See you soon, virtually or in person! Happy Wheatstalk!
