Location: Talkeetna Case number: 08-72452 Type: Search and Rescue Text: On 8-29-08 at approximately 1733 hours, Troopers and Mat-Su EMS rescue personnel responded to a report of a boat that had overturned in the Talkeetna River with three people on board. The boat had struck a log while navigating a curve in the river. One of the occupants was identified as Scott Schumacher, age 59 of New Jersey. Schumacher was thrown clear of the boat when it overturned. Schumacher was rescued by another boat that was nearby. The other two occupants of the boat were trapped under the boat as it continued to drift downstream. They were identified as Joseph Merrill, age 54 of Palmer and his 14 year old son, Matthew. All occupants were wearing personal flotation devices. EMS rescue personnel quickly responded along with Steve Mahay, age 61 of Talkeetna, in a Mahay's Riverboat Service jet-boat to rescue Merrill and the boy. Mahay hooked his anchor onto the overturned boat and pulled it upright with his boat. Merrill and his son were rescued, having spent more than 30 minutes trapped under the boat with a six inch air pocket allowing them to breathe. Merrill and his son were transported by EMS to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center for mild hypothermia. Schumacher was released by EMS at the scene. Location: Talkeetna Case number: 08-72040 Type: Self Inflicted Gun Shot Wound Text: On 8/28/08 at about 1405 hours AST was notified by the Sunshine Medical Clinic in Talkeetna that Stephen Wright, 34 of Anchorage had come in with a gun shot wound to his shoulder. Investigating indicates that Wright was bird hunting when his 22 cal. rifle discharged as he was bending down, and he was subsequently shot in the shoulder. Wright is being transported via ambulance to Mat-Su Regional Hospital for treatment at this time. Investigation is ongoing. Location: Talkeetna Case number: 08-69162 Type: Vehicle Fire Text: On 8/19/08 at about 1345 hours AST was notified that there was a vehicle currently on fire near mile 2.3 of the Talkeetna Spur Road. When AST arrived there was a 1996 Dodge truck parked on the power line that was fully engulfed with flames. Fire and EMS arrived and put the fire out. No one was discovered near the vehicle. Investigation indicates that the fire was set intentionally. The truck was a total loss and was valued at about $6000.00 and was towed from the scene. A power pole was also badly burned during the fire. Investigation is ongoing, anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the Talkeetna Post of the Alaska State Troopers at 907-733-2256. Goff, 20 YOA of Fairbanks, AK for making a False Statement on his 2008 Alaska Sport Fishing License after being contacted at Willow Creek. Bail was at $310.00 in the Palmer District Court. Location: Talkeetna Case number: 08-66108 Type: DUI Text: On 8-10-08 at approximately 0140 hours, Troopers located a Ford truck parked in the middle of the road on Barge Road in Talkeetna. The driver was passed out in the drivers seat. The driver was identified as Earl Negus, age 47 of Talkeetna. Investigation revealed that Negus was driving under the influence of alcohol. Negus was arrested and remanded into MSPT, where bail was set at $5,000 plus a court approved third party custodian.
