Grace reading short stories at WWR Whole Wheat Radio is an online collaborative wiki radio station originating from Talkeetna, Alaska. (Click on any blue words to find out more about that subject, but first click one of the "Listen" links on the left to hear what this is all about.)
We are in the midst of our sixth year of live webcasting 24/7/365 and our third year of presenting live house concerts to both the local and the worldwide internet community. We are a non-profit, non-hype driven labor of love to which listeners have donated $36,875.74. We feature the music of 3,067 truly talented independent artists who appreciate the opportunity to have their 39,696 songs be heard on a funky, non-traditional webcast. We've had over 13,474,186 listens to the more than 659,269 tunes we've played. Listeners have purchased 2,771 CDs from CDBaby via WWR, generating $2,784 in referral payments for WWR. We tend to appeal to grownups who don't take life too seriously - the average age of people hanging out here is 48 years old.
Oh, and the mysterious we that keeps cropping up in these sentences is - you. You are the Whole Wheat Radio collaborative that makes everything fun, creative and independent.
The WWR website/wiki that you're looking at right now forms the basis of the WWR community. This site is being built by people just like you - 950 of 'em who've been active on the site over the last 4 months to be exact. It is constantly changing as new pages are added, and other pages are revised and edited. It is a huge dynamic knowledge base of both independent artists and music that grownups like - and there's always something more to contribute.
Everyone is encouraged to contribute content. A good way to get started is to create your own User page and contribute your photo to the Listener gallery. Or, maybe you'd like to describe how you found WWR or maybe you want to request some songs to play shortly. Or, just come on over to one of the friendly chat rooms and get to know some of us in person. While you're enjoying the music you can help organize the music library by helping to categorize whatever song is currently playing. Or, maybe you'd like to say "Hello" to everyone listening by calling in your own on-the-air phonegram that will air shortly after you hang up. There's always something fun to do while you're listening.
But ultimately, despite its cutting edge website and chat community, the heart of Whole Wheat Radio is the independent music we play. If all the bells and whistles of this site are intimidating or just too much, don't hesitate to become one of our many silent listeners. We all relate. Music that moves you deep down in your soul doesn't need a computer keyboard to work its magic. Many members of the community listen frequently but seldom visit the website - and that's perfectly okay.
If you're a website fanatic, feel free to explore the site using the links on this page. When you're ready to start contributing, just jump right in. It may seem complicated, but editing a page is really pretty simple. Don't be afraid of messing something up. Changes made to a page can always be "rolled back."
