Our current Bass tag doesn't allow us to differential between a bass guitar and a string bass. Scobey (talk/contribs) 12:09, July 19, 2008 (AKDT)
"String bass" is ambiguous because both instruments have strings. I suggest "upright bass" and "bass guitar." — Mert (talk/contribs)

With a few exceptions (Stanley Clarke and Tony Levin immediately come to mind) bass, whether upright and electric, is rarely a featured instrument in music, especially the music I hear most frequently here on WWR. That said, I'm not sure what value differentiating tags would provide. Nonetheless, I agree that (acoustic)upright bass and (electric) bass guitar would seem to be the most logical "differentiating" bass tags. Kimchifox (talk/contribs) 09:01, July 20, 2008 (AKDT)

It would be nice for standup bass players to be able to hear a show of songs where the standup bass / double bass is prominent but, like all tags, it takes someone with both a musical ear and knowledge of how the tags are being used to correctly tag the songs. That being said, I think it'd be a useful tag to add. Jim (talk/contribs) 13:56, July 20, 2008 (AKDT)

I don't believe I could tell the difference between the two consistently just by listening. Cub Driver (talk/contribs) 11:11, July 21, 2008 (AKDT)

I love double bass, and would see bass guitar as quite different. Can we have these two tags? Peterdale(talk/contribs) July 21 2008

  • I see there's been no action on this debate for over a month, but I believe that the 2 tags could be well used. --JohnA (talk/contribs) 08:35, September 26, 2008 (AKDT)

Do Not Add a tag

  • Based on Cub saying he couldn't tell the difference, and because I'm not sure anyone can, I'll cast my vote here. Not meaning to be a wet blanket and I can be over-ruled happily. I think maybe the show I'd build to get the "standup bass" would be bluegrass/old-time/acoustic and then Bass. That would sort of imply chances are good the bass I'd get would be an acoustic standup. • I'm no expert, but I don't understand how a Bass Guitar and a Double Bass sound anything alike. However, I would probably not often be able to tell the difference between an Electric Guitar and Bass Guitar and would also have problems with Double Bass vs. Cello. I agree that using the type of music or even the acoustic/electric tag would be good enough for shows. Kelli (talk/contribs) 19:03, July 23, 2008 (AKDT)
