Kids: No kid care will be provided for this show - unless you bring it. Probably not a good show for small kids to attend anyway. But if you want to come and can't make other arrangements for the little ones, just make sure they are downstairs and don't disturb the adults in the audience. Thanks!

Marian Call Biography
Great article about Marian Call that just appeared in ADN!
Well, thankfully, Marian does not have a "standard" bio on any of her websites. I say thankfully because musical resumes bios are often drab and boring (i.e. we all have one don't we?) But you can get a very good idea about who Marian is by looking over any one of her three self-created websites. I suggest doing that just for the thrill of finding some clever and funny quotes. Here are a few:
Sounds Like: The play-by-play commentary for lower division psychological/spiritual wrestling matches. Usually between Me, my Self, and I. Primarily narrated by an overeducated, underexperienced, extremely enthusiastic vocal contortionist.
If you're looking for artist comparisons, Marian Call sounds a little like this:
The love child of Joni Mitchell and Jason Mraz gets a little tipsy at a party hosted by Pink Martini and winds up staying out all night carousing with Ani DiFranco, Erin McKeown, Fiona Apple, & the Ditty Bops, only to be arrested for double inflections, odd instrumentation, and irregular phrase lengths by Sufjan Stevens and Regina Spektor.
(All of the above comparisons provided by fans. I hope to someday be as cool as any of those guys -- but sound less and less like them, and more and more like myself.)
Influences: I don't know that I influence anyone as of yet, but I'm sure someday I'll manage to get a song stuck in someone's head for so long that they call me an influence. Or a mild form of torture. In either case, I'm happy to help.

This is going to be an unusual house concert in several ways. First, Marian (who lives in Anchorage) is bringing a stand-up bass player and drummer to accompany her. Second, Marian is able to slip from mellow singer-songwriter to jazz diva to funk folkie. Third, Marian is relatively new to the house concert performance scene and that leaves room for the excitement of the unknown.
Personally, I'm really excited to hear Marian live. When I got her CD (and I get a lot of them here at WWR) I immediately noticed a clarity, strength and character of voice that surprised me. It wouldn't have surprised me if Marian lived in New York, but it surprised me that she lives in Anchorage and I'd not heard of her before. That she appreciates the intimacy of house concerts and the way they allow a real connection between audience and performer was another clue that Marian is "a find".
So please come join me and let's all get to know Marian and her music together. I'm really looking foward to it!

And yes, everybody, I do want to meet you. I really really want to meet you. So come to a gig! Set up a gig! At this point I'm un-famous enough that I can play at your birthday party or in your living room or backyard.
I have to aim for connection over mass advertising, and honesty over image. It's probably foolish, but it's who I am. I'm keeping my operation small and personal for now. And I hope it keeps feeling that way even as it grows. Think of it as the Browncoat marketing model: relationship-based, fan-driven, very polite, yet aiming to misbehave and mess with the corporate status quo. That means I am relying almost totally on you -- the folks who like my music -- to spread the word.
The truth is, people like me don't get signed to major labels. I'm too old (at 25!), my music is too weird, and I won't behave like they would want me to. I'm an Innepennant. So that means I actually need you. And isn't it nice to be needed? Thanks to you guys, in today's world, I have a chance of not-starving even without a label. I don't wanna be famous -- just not-starving. I try to set realistic goals.
My family is the artistic sort. We're all a little special. My mother is a painter, and she arranges objects in our house according to color and texture rather than function. So she put Zippy (cat remains) up in the rack of fine imported teas and spices in our kitchen.
By this time I was in college. And I'm not sure exactly when it started, but at some point Zippy (cat remains) became a fixture at family gatherings. We brought him to parties and graduations and weddings. We brought him on family road trips.
I imagine Johnny Cash singing this song instead of me, but me's all I got, so me's who sang it.
