The Mammals are the vanguard of the next generation of folk singers. Ruth Ungar (daughter of Jay Ungar) on fiddle, ukuleles, glockenspiel, sewing machine, and vocals. Tao Rodriguez-Seeger (grandson of Pete Seeger) on banjo (even borrows grandad's longneck sometimes), 6- and 12-string guitars, bodhran, and vocals. Lead vocals are most often sung by Michael Merenda, who also plays banjos, guitar, bass, drums, and percussion. They often get help from Jay Ungar and Molly Mason on the fiddle, mandolin, and upright bass, as well as Sarah Lee Guthrie (grandaughter of Woody and daughter of Arlo) providing some backup vocals and her husband Johnny Irion on the dobro. Pete Seeger even lends his voice once in a while.
They call themselves "subversive acoustic traditionalists". The music they play is a mixture of old time traditional folk music (in their own youthful and highly energetic style), and recent compositions, mostly by Ungar and Merenda. They obviously have a lot of fun doing it. Their albums are befitting of fun loving mammals; Born Live, Evolver, Migration. More recently, they have released Rock That Babe and Departure...a departure into more modern, and less acoustic, folk.

- I actually discovered the Mammals before I found Whole Wheat Radio. Before the 2004 election, I got a copy of The M.O.B. (Musicians to Oust Bush) Project from Benji Nichols, and fell in love with Michael Merenda's satirical lulluby, The Bush Boys. That album also had a song from Jay Ungar & Molly Mason, and was the first I had ever heard Greg Brown. - The song Industrial Park was played a lot when I first started listening. I will forever associate it with WWR. I just love the way that banjo starts it out. And I also remember the morning when WWR was caught in an endless sound loop -- playing the last 20 seconds of that song (the "industrial" part) over and over and over and over. - Industrial Park is probably my favorite Mammals song...great banjo, and spoken words by Pete Seeger. The last paragraph is from Dwight Eisenhower's famous speech warning against the military industrial complex. The "industrial" ending to the song is so disturbing, I usually skip over it.
