When I was 10, I used to steal Linda's Silvertone out from under her bed when she wasn't around and copy her. I was always copying my older sister Linda (Sunshine). When I turned 13, she gave me one of my own for my birthday. So I'd have to say that she had the biggest influence on my becoming a musician. My father played piano and listened to all kinds of jazz and folk and off-the-map stuff. He taught me how to hear what was good and why it was good—Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Willie Wright, Eartha Kitt. I loved Judy Garland as a kid, and Tony Bennett. I copied the way they expressed their emotions through their voices.
I've always felt that a single person singing from his or her heart is one of the most powerful experiences you can have as a human being. I believe the truth of love expressed in this way can unlock any soul, even if only for a moment. It presents the possibility of rising above fear. So, yeah, I haven't had a lot of commercial success, but my life has been a wonderful unfolding of feelings and experiences, steps towards freeing myself from fear, and standing with honor and gratitude. I don't think there's a category for that at WalMart.
