Jackson Browne has written and performed some of the most literate and moving songs in popular music and has defined a genre of songwriting charged with honesty, emotion and personal politics. He's been honored with inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2004) and the Songwriter's Hall of Fame (2007). At the latter ceremony, Jackson performed his song "Lives In The Balance," which SHOF notes is, "a fitting example of how his social and political activism have influenced much of his work."
Browne's latest release, 2008's Time The Conqueror, is his first set of new material in six years. Accompanying Browne is his band of fifteen years: Kevin McCormick (bass), Mark Goldenberg (guitars), Mauricio Lewak (drums) and Jeff Young (keyboards, backing vocals). They have been with him since 1993's I'm Alive, playing on Looking East ('96) and The Naked Ride Home ('02).
On Time The Conqueror, they're joined by new members Chavonne Morris and Alethea Mills, vocalists Browne met in 2001 when they were attending Washington Preparatory High School in South Los Angeles and singing with Fred Martin & The Levite Camp. Morris and Mills are also prominently featured on The Levite Camp's debut CD, 2006's Some Bridges, an album Browne coproduced and performed on, and which features six of his songs. Rosie Flores, Heather Waters and Danny Ott appear on harmony vocals.
This lineup brings its natural chemistry and collaborative energy to Time The Conqueror, which was produced by Browne and Paul Dieter, and is the 13th studio album of Browne's career. Released on the artist's own independent label Inside Recordings, the disc's ten diverse original songs are emblematic of Browne's ability to address personal, inner-directed reflection and matters of social and political import with equal passion and intelligence.
