Adi Sappir is a cellist who hails originally from Israel but is now based in Melbourne, Victoria. She received training from two of Israel’s leading cellists: Dr. David Sella - a former member of New York University music faculty, and Emanuel Gruber - principal cellist of the Israeli Chamber Orchestra. Adi is also a graduate student of the musicology faculty at Bar- Ilan University, Tel-Aviv.
During her studies, Adi participated in a variety of music events and ensembles. She was a member of Ein Hod quintet, attended local music seminars, and travelled to Idyllwild, California and the Czech Republic for master classes and chamber music training.
Along with playing classical music, she has also played in rock bands and taken part in creating music for theatre productions for the colleges of performing arts: Beit Zvi and Nisan Nativ. As a part of the musicology course, Adi was exposed to traditional music from the Middle East and Eastern Europe. She documented the music of Jews who arrived in Israel from Morocco, and was fascinated by the melodies and rhythms. Later on, she attended a world music seminar in Jerusalem (Shoresh). The traditional tunes and scales take a significant role in her debut album ‘Under the Clocks’, produced in Melbourne last year. read more.
